A)   Встречное движение b2-b4
B)   Наступление в центре d4-d5
C)   Сохранение напряжения в центре

A)   Встречное движение b2-b4

Наиболее конкретная реакция белых одновременно является и, как мне кажется, самой модной. Впервые столкнулся с идеей b2-b4 в поединке последнего тура кругового турнира в Киеве(столица Украины).

In those years it turned out to be a surprise for the author. 10...b5 11.axb5 cxb5

Taking by c-pawn also makes sense.  The c-file and diagonal are opened for pressure (b7-e4). [More habitual is 11...axb5 ] 12.Bb3 Bb7 13.Bb2 Qc7 14.h3 Rac8 15.Qd3 Rfe8 16.d5 Natural movement which raises obstacles before black and...white pieces. Both white-squared bishops become “blunt”, the c3-knight is also passive now. 16...Nb6= 17.Nd2

George is likely to prepare movement с2-с4. If it had been carried out, then after exchanges on с4 the a6-pawn would have been subject to pressure, and so would have been the whole queenside of Black.

17...Nh5 18.Nd1 Bg5 19.Ne3 Ra8?! Looks artificial [19...h6] 20.g3 [White has certain superiority after the described above. 20.c4 bxc4 21.Ndxc4 Bxe3 22.Nxe3 Nf4 23.Qf1+/= Obviously, the Ukrainian grand master supposed that с2-с4 is inevitable and tried to implement it in the most comfortable way.]

20...Bc8 21.Kh2 Bd7 Now the bishop has been activated and is working on two flanks. 22.c3 [Already not good 22.c4 bxc4 23.Ndxc4 Bb5 with initiative] 22...Qc8 23.Bd1 Nf6 24.Qf1 a5=/+

For 4-5 moves literally the estimation has considerably changed from “+/=” to “=/+”. All black pieces are successfully placed whereas in enemy camp one can see some disharmony. 25.Bf3 Na4 26.c4?! Intensifies problems, but there are no good continuations in sight. 26...axb4 27.cxb5 Qb8 28.Be2 Bxe3 29.fxe3 Nc3–+

White’s pawn structure is irreparably debilitated which determines objective assessment – Blacks stands technically won. 30.Bxc3 bxc3 31.Nc4 Nxe4 32.Qg2 f5 Natural and strong

33.Bd3 Nc5 Maybe not the best [33...Nf6!?] 34.Bf1 Ne4 35.Rec1 Rc8 36.Bd3 Ra4! 37.Qe2 Nf6 [Even stronger is 37...Rcxc4 38.Bxc4 Nd2 39.Bd3 Ra2 40.Kh1 e4 41.Bc4 Ra4–+] 38.Rxc3 e4 Unavoidable in time-trouble imperfections [more accurate was 38...Nxd5 ] 39.Bc2 Nxd5 40.Bb3!
The only right move which makes the opponent find the decision within last 1–2 minutes (it’s the 40th control move).

40...Nxc3? [40...Kh8] 41.Nxd6+ Kf8 42.Qh5 Looks very horrible. The lonely king is assaulted by almost the whole white army. 42...Ke7 the only move 43.Nxc8+ Qxc8 44.Qf7+ Kd6  Important moment. I have spoiled the position so much that White has better chances. 45.Rc1? [Right is 45.Rb2 continuing pressure] 45...Rb4 46.Rd1+

Moral attack! 46...Kc7 [I felt I had to act principally but had no energy long variants. 46...Nxd1! 47.Qd5+ Kc7 48.Qc5+ Kb8 49.Qb6+ Qb7 50.Qd8+ Bc8 51.Qd6+ Qc7 52.Qxb4 Nxe3 53.b6 Nf1+ 54.Kg2 Qxg3+ 55.Kxf1 Ba6+ 56.Bc4 e3–+]

47.Rd2 Qe8 48.Rc2 Qxf7?

Full exhaustion at the end of the tournament. Grudgingly, I decided to simplify the position. Taking into account the game’s importance, it was a wrong decision, of course. Black fixes transfer into a safe ending with extra pawn. However, it is hardly probable to win. [Much better was 48...Qe5–+ ] 49.Bxf7 [49.Rxc3+ Rc4 50.Rxc4+ Kb6 51.Rc6+ Kxb5 52.Bxf7 Kxc6 with easy draw: h3-h4, Kh2-g2-f2...] 49...Kd6 50.Rxc3 Rb2+ 51.Kg1 Rxb5 52.h4

Certainly, George operates skilfully and doesn’t allow the black king to pass forward freely (Kg7-h6-h5-g4-f3). 63...Kh6 64.hxg6 hxg6 65.g4! fxg4 66.Re5 And soon draw agreed. 1/2
